K-5th Grade Lessons

In this lesson, students will create a classroom community collage using images that they create with geometric shapes while learning about a contemporary installation artist. Rationale - This lesson teaches students the importance of community while strengthening their independent working skills as they discover the connection between mathematics (geometry) and structural art.

In this lesson, students will understand what artists make purposeful art choices to share what they observe about their world. Students will observe landscapes and analyze how and why the time of day changes the way we perceive color. Students will assemble a paper sculpture depicting a camp site during a time of day of their choosing which will engage them to think about purposeful color choices.

In this lesson, students will study and make connections to Greek culture and artwork to their everyday lives. Students will construct a Greek vase of made from scratch paper. Vases will be decorated with intrinsic and detailed patterns as they were originally. Greek vases will represent Student’s daily lives and customs in the center of their pots so acknowledge that Greek vases shared stories, identity, and culture. Greek vases will be presented on Greek columns such as Ionic and Doric to show learned knowledge of ancient Greek architecture. In the end, students will participate in a gallery walk to share their artwork and experience a positive art critique environment.

In this lesson, Students will learn about artist, Courtney Mattison who is an artist who focuses ocean conservation and the effects between human vs. nature. Students will learn that art is also a way to bring awareness to current issues and opinions. Students will learn to make a slab out of clay and create their own ocean scenery within a fishbowl. Students can interpret this project in whatever way they would like.

In this lesson, students will be introduced functional artwork. Art can be simultaneously functional and artistic. Students will be reminded and reassessed on making a clay slab. They will learn techniques on coil making and construction. In the end students will assemble, glaze, and decorate their sea turtles with their own personal twist. The focus and main goal of this lesson is to create a functional artwork and advancing students gross and fine motor skills using clay as the source material.
